Caring for Our Land

Except for changes caused by erosion, the land of many of the existing ranches in Alameda County has remained the same for generations. The ranchers respect their land and the vegetation and wildlife that live there. Some of the ranchers work with environmental agencies to protect endangered species that live on their land.

Grinding stones or large rocks or boulders with grinding holes used by the Costanoan and Ohlone tribes of Native Americans that lived in this region of California can be found on many of the ranches and when visitors are given a tour of a ranch with grinding stones or holes, they are often included as part of the tour.
